Indian artist Sarbani Sen is back for her 5^th solo exhibition in London

Sarbani’s work is about nature and man’s relationship with his environment. A compulsive traveller, a brilliant scholar, an ardent nature lover, that she has the stance of a romantic there is no doubt. She blends classic romanticism with mathematical precision to create a perfect balance of beauty and tranquility.Landscape for her is a subjective reality, an atonement, where the beholder and beholden become one. Nothing is allowed to intrude in this space, not even the artist’s own presence.

The desert paintings are a somewhat different story. The unyielding near empty land, the relentless sun, the harsh wind, the figures as if seen through upward moving hot air, sometimes bordering on surrealism – here the story is of struggle and compromise of life and living with and against nature. A recurrent theme of water pots run through the canvasses. To the artist each woman carrying a pot of water to her desert home is Laxmi, Goddess of Grace bringing home the elixir of everlasting life.

About the Artist

Sarbani has always had a great urge to explore the unknown, to go beyond the horizon, beyond the next mountain range, to see outside a closed gate and inside the covers of an unread volume. Along with her curriculum in the university, she had read extensively on art and gained an in-depth knowledge of classical and contemporary art in India, Europe and Japan. So, when she gave up a career in mathematics and started sketching and painting whole heartedly she was armed with an intensive knowledge of the theoretical side of painting and her mind was completely in tune with the sights and sounds around her.

From 1974 she started painting seriously, her subject remaining nature and man’s relationship with nature. In early eighties, in Bombay, she came under the guidance of late Prof. N. S. Bendre of J.J.School of Arts, Mumbai, one of the great painters in India. From him she learnt the value of following her own instincts over being academic. She said of these years to Economic Times, “… I have spent more time with canvases that I imagined I would be painting than doing the actual painting. My mind has sped, leaving the brush to plod behind. Vision and imagery crowded my eyes but they eluded the hand… ”. While her vision is definitely that of a romantic, nothing diluted the rigours of intellectual scrutiny.

Her work varies from realistic to stylised semi abstraction.

Sarbani started to show her paintings in exhibitions from 1981. She has had twenty five solo exhibitions of her paintings in galleries in Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta and London, including three in London.

The campaign aims to raise the profile of wool as a versatile, natural fibre and help revive British sheep farming. The exhibition focuses on the modern, innovative and avant garde use of wool throughout the creative industries and features the best of wool in carpets, insulation and fashion, with items from Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith amongst others.

The exhibition is set to break the traditional perceptions of wool fibre and create a new platform for wool in the 21st century.

Prince Charles says: "When we first discussed this campaign, it appeared that wool had been forgotten. It was being ignored in favour of fabrics made from non-renewable fossil fuels. Wool leaves a lighter footprint on the planet compared to man-made products and when you consider how long it lasts, it represents fantastic value."

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall have opened a new exhibition to showcase wool pieces from some of the world's top designers.
The Wool Modern exhibition at La Galleria on Pall Mall in central London is the highlight of this year's Wool Week, which is part of the Campaign for Wool launched by Charles in 2010.
Camilla wore a woollen dress designed by Anna Valentine and actor Colin Firth and his wife, Livia Firth, turned out to show their support.
The campaign aims to raise the profile of wool as a versatile, natural fibre and help revive British sheep farming.
Renowned figures from the fashion and design industries were invited to the exhibition to view the best of wool in carpets, insulation products and fashion pieces.
Items from designers Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood took centre stage.
Charles said: "When you start something like this you wonder if anyone is going to respond at all, so the fact that there has been such a positive response is enormously encouraging.
"When we launched the campaign for wool it was in an unbelievably cold barn in January. It did actually require a great deal of wool to survive.

What is the Campaign for Wool?

The Campaign for Wool was initiated in October 2008 by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, who had observed that the wool industry was facing enormous and unprecedented challenges.
The price of wool had plummeted to the point where farmers were being paid less for their sheeps’ fleeces than the cost of having them shorn.
At the same time, sheep numbers were declining across the world, from Britain to Australia and New Zealand, and some farmers were losing confidence in the future of the wool industry.
A parallel threat came from new man-made synthetic fibres, often oil-based, which were providing stiff competition in the areas where wool had traditionally triumphed – fashion, carpets and insulation.
The Prince of Wales formed an apocalyptic view of what the future for wool might hold, unless something could be done. Without a thriving wool industry, and with further declines in the sheep population, the physical appearance of our landscape could change forever. Imagine the Cumbrian uplands deprived of sheep, or the Scottish and Welsh mountains, or the sheep stations of Australia and New Zealand. Were we really to enter an era when the wool trade, which has thrived and prospered since the Middle Ages, would be sidelined by man-made fibres?

Solo Show July 5^th – July 16^th 2011

is a British sculptor who grew up on the Isle of Wight and now lives and works on the East Sussex/Kent border near Tunbridge Wells, UK. She was elected to the Royal British Society of Sculptors as an Associate Member in 2010.

Giblin studied Three-Dimensional Design, Fine Art/Sculpture B.A. and the History and Theory of Modern Art M.A at Portsmouth, Brighton and Chelsea (London Institute) colleges of Art and Design. She was taught by Antony Gormley (creator of ‘Angel of the North’)

Giblin’s sensual and striking sculpture is produced in ceramic then cast in bronze, translucent resin or cold cast metals. Her subject matter is portraiture and the human form, often involving detailed, overlapping, fragmented or abstracted imagery. The sculptor develops ideas from observation sketches, digital imagery and written works.

Giblin’s work has been exhibited in London, New York, Hong Kong, Oxfordshire and across the South of England.

Alison Knight Assemblage artist Alison Knight is a London based assemblage artist. Using mixed media, collections of objet trouve and accumulated flotsam from the antique and junk markets of the world, she assembles boxes along thematic and sometimes biographic lines. ‘Lisette’s Dream’: Photographs by Richard Trench, ARPS

This is the second show by the unusual London based duo. Alison Knight’s intriguing and often amusing assemblages dovetail nicely with the photographs of Richard Trench who specialises in the somewhat niche area of making emotive images from miniature antique figures, often using elements of Alison’s assemblage pieces.

The odd thing about both the photographs and the assemblages is their strange dreamlike quality and in the case of the images, a curious ability to make scale irrelevant compared to the emotive content.

Three of the most interesting sculptures of Leonardo Lucchi are The Swing, Sarong and The Skipping Rope. Their poses are all in movement, three beautiful girls playing, ready to escape the room and go outdoors. This 'unstatic' tendency that they have is the sculpture's main brilliance, at least for my part. Without escaping into abstract shapes, the sculptor has achieved a figurative perfection and at the same time absolute movement. Placing each of these sculptures in a room creates a light positive atmosphere that can drive us back to our pleasurable childhood memories. You shouldn't miss the opportunity to see them live in Lucchi's Exhibition at ROA Gallery in Pall Mall (12th until the 28th of April).

The Katherine Maginnis visual arts agency is launching its first exhibition with a collection of abstract paintings at the ROA Gallery, London. Collaborating with emerging and midcareer artists of various disciplines, the intention is to develop work that is guided by a visceral sensibility. The show explores the interplay between the internal state and the exterior world inhabited by the artists. Painters, Dragica Carlin, Simon Cook, Nicholas de Serra and Clare Wilson interpret their surroundings, experiences and memories, to create works that are underpinned by an emotional resonance.

Dragica Carlin searches for an abstract visual language that captures a metaphysical narrative. Through her paintings, Carlin explores the notion of the reciprocal action between man and his environment.

Simon Cook’s new body of work has been paired down to an abstract entity. Employing natural materials with a synthetic colour palette, Cook creates paintings which posses a luminous quality and a spiritual connection.

Nicholas De Serra takes us on a journey where duality and difference combine to create works that quietly resonate. Influenced by the economic/political landscape and his rural surroundings, his densely detailed pieces are neither ‘Concrete’ nor descriptive narratives.

Clare Wilson’s paintings emerge from a process of layering, removing and reworking - in doing so, the works are simplified to a place of stillness. Wilson draws from the detail of a moment, its curious shadows, abstract movements, textures and memories which resurface in a veiled light.

CHARLIE ANDERSON FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION IN LONDON

Prize-winning young artist, Charles (“Charlie”) Anderson is to hold his first solo exhibition and sale in London at the Royal Opera Arcade Gallery between Monday, 28^th March and Saturday, 2^nd April 2011.

Primarily based in Edinburgh, Charlie Anderson is a painter whose work explores the historical role of painting and its place in contemporary art. By juxtaposing information and imagery taken from all aspects of contemporary life, he develops new and critical definitions, often with a satirical twist.

His paintings are reminiscent of the weathered, layered effect of street advertising and billboards, which he re-creates through the sole use of paint.

(Professor of the History of Scottish Art in the University of Edinburgh and principal art critic of The Scotsman)

While not denying the talent or popular and commercial appeal of Banksy, Lichtenstein and others, Charlie rejects such simplistic labels as Pop Art, Urban Art or Graffiti Art and feels that his own work speaks to the eye of a more demanding and discerning collector: One who recognizes and values the classic skills of the artist.

“It is important to recognize the classic skills of the artist; such as drawing and painting. In my view, being edgy, observational or humorous is, in and of itself, simply not enough” said Charlie.

“My exhibition in London, the epicenter of the Art World, is an opportunity for me to define what I mean. I value and relish the opportunity and hope people will come and see my work.” he added.

Amongst his recognitions, Charlie won the British Airways Degree Show Prize and was awarded the Meyer Oppenheim Prize by the Scottish Academy.

His paintings are held by a number of well-known private and corporate collections. Their obvious appeal can be seen in the collection that will be exhibited.

The exhibition will be open daily between 10:00 and 19:00 from Monday,28^thMarch until Friday 1^st April and between 10:00 and 14:00 on Saturday,2^ndApril.

The human and the woman bodies are represented in many of the works. Though human body in any culture is the same. It is interesting to see how each artist put in his perspective and colors this subject. Each art work comes with its different ethnic, age and shape.

Different techniques are used. From paints on canvas, bronze status and collages.

The exhibition incorporates works of 41 best artists that are famous at their countries. Their works are part of private collections and museums around the world. They participated in various international art exhibitions in Europe, America and Asia.
